The Armor of God

Stay alert!  Watch out for attacks from Satan, your great enemy.  He prowls around like a hungry, roaring lion, looking for some victim to tear apart.  Stand firm against him and be strong in your faith.  Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world are going through the same kind of suffering you are.” 1 Peter 5: 8-9

“A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.  For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.  Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.  Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.  Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.  For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.  In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.  Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.  Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.  Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”  Ephesians 6: 10-18

No soldier steps naked onto a battlefield. He gears up, protecting himself with his armor and weapons in every way he can.  He maximizes and leverages everything he knows about surviving so that he can overcome the enemy.

For the Christian, the battles are all around us; they’re in the world, but they’re inside of us, too.  And they’re unceasing.

So, the Apostle Paul tells us to stay alert and stand our ground, wearing the armor of God.

The belt, which holds the armor in place, is truth.  In order to fasten and wear that belt, we must first know the truth.  When we know the truth, we know what is right in the eyes of God and can therefore wear the body armor of God’s righteousness.  We know the truth and we know what is right in the eyes of God by knowing the Word of God.

And when we know his Holy Word, we are armed with the sword of the Spirit.

The peace that comes from knowing and believing the Good News about Jesus Christ is the antidote to fear; the shoes on our feet that lead us anywhere we’re called to go, even if that’s the lion’s den itself.

Our faith is the shield that protects us from every weapon the enemy has. Faith is a gift from God and anytime we need more, we can simply ask Him for it.

Our helmet is our salvation in Jesus Christ.  We put the helmet on every time we praise God for what He has done for us through Jesus’ life, death for our sins and resurrection, which conquered death forever.  The battlefield of the mind is one of Satan’s favorite places to ambush and devour the Christian.  We protect our mind with the helmet of our salvation; the blood of the Lamb and our testimony about it.

Without this armor, we are as helpless as toddlers wandering around a raging battlefield in the great spiritual war.  We must learn every detail we can about our armor and how to wear it so that we can protect ourselves and intercede for our brothers and sisters in Christ all over the world.
