Thanksgiving – a sacrifice that greatly pleases God

“What can I give the Lord for all the good things he has given to me? I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to you and call on the name of the Lord.”  Psalm 116: 12, 17

It goes without saying that thanking someone for something good they’ve done for you is, at the very least, the polite thing to do.  That’s the milk of the matter.  The meat of the matter is that by giving thanks to our Father in heaven, as with praise, we are declaring to every created thing in the heavens, hell and on earth that the Most High God is our sole provider and that we know where our blessings come from.

The Holy Scriptures say that thanksgiving is a sacrifice.  The human heart is a very proud thing.  The human heart wants independence and control; it wants to be in charge of its destiny.  The human heart wants to be its own lord.

One of our adversaries in the spiritual war is our own heart.  “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked.  Who really knows how bad it is?” Jeremiah 17:9

Giving thanks to our God forces the wicked, human heart to submit to His authority, and if we expect to grow strong and refine our skills so we are experts with spiritual weapons, we should sacrifice our heart to God daily.  This sacrifice is most pleasing to him.

We give thanks for what he has done and what he is going to do, people in our lives, how he cares for us, our material possessions, our physical and spiritual blessings and anything else deserving of our thanks.
